What is a garden suite?
On February 2, 2022, Toronto City Council adopted the Garden Suites Official Plan Amendment and Zoning by-law Amendment. In Toronto, a "garden suite" typically refers to a self-contained residential unit that is located on the same lot as a detached house. These units are often located in the rear yard and are separate from the main dwelling. Garden suites are a type of secondary suite that can provide additional housing options within established residential neighborhoods. They are considered a form of affordable housing as they can provide more rental options and potentially increase the housing supply in the city.
The City of Toronto has been exploring ways to facilitate the development of garden suites as part of its efforts to address the housing affordability and availability challenges. In recent years, there have been discussions and initiatives aimed at easing regulations and zoning bylaws to make it easier for homeowners to build these types of additional dwelling units on their properties.
